Life Story for Matthew Looney

Matthew Looney
Rev. Matthew D. Looney, 87 passed away peacefully while visiting his loving family in Ireland on January 8th, 2018.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, January 18th at 10:00 at Holy Trinity Church, 506 Westfield Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 17th from 4 – 7 pm at Holy Trinity Church, Westfield.
Vigil and reception to follow the visiting on Wednesday evening.
Burial at the family plot will be private following the Funeral Mass on Thursday.
Son of late Margaret (nee Stancy) and Daniel Looney, he is predeceased by sister Josephine and brother-in-law Harry Quinn, and brothers Daniel, William and Thomas as well as nephews William and Thomas. He will be deeply missed by his sister-in-law Joyce Looney, niece Margaret Quinn Walsh, nephew Dennis Looney and nieces-in-laws Jo-Ann Looney and Rita Looney. Loved by his great nephews and nieces as well as his 7 great-grand nieces as well as the many grateful parishioners of the Newark Archdiocese in which he was ordained on May 31, 1958.

Father Looney graduated from Seton Hall University and the Immaculate Conception Seminary. He retired last year from his priestly duties at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Westfield where he had happily worked for over 20 years. Previously Father Looney had worked in Holy Family Church, Union City, St Anne's Church, Jersey City, Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, Our Lady of Peace Church, New Providence, St John's Church, Jersey City and Jersey City Medical Center. Throughout his fulfilling stewardship he proudly helped run the Seniors program across his parish assignments, founding the Holy Trinity Senior Social Club where he led lively groups of seniors on many wonderful journeys. He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace Uncle Matt.
