Obituary for Eleanor Senus

Eleanor Senus
Eleanor Helen Senus
Formerly of Westfield
Mrs. Eleanor H. Senus passed away Saturday June 23rd, 2018 at the Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. She was 78 years old.
Born in Rome, NY to Edward and Mary Schilling, Eleanor grew up in Rome with her brother Ed. She attended schools locally and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1958. She met her late husband Leo J. Senus as a small child living on the same street, until the families moved to other houses. They came back together as teenagers in high school, and continued dating through the college years and Leo’s military service until they married in 1965.
They moved to Brooklyn, NY when Leo took a job in Manhattan, and started a family, having both sons Leon E. and Gregory P.
The family moved to Westfield in the summer of 1970 and set down roots. As the boys grew, both Eleanor and Leo became involved with their sons’ activities. Eleanor was involved with their early days in scouting, serving as Den Mother for both boys.
As time went on both Eleanor and Leo became involved in local civic activities. Eleanor ran her husband’s successful election campaign for the local school board in the late 70’s, and subsequent reelections.
She also became involved with the Westfield Day care center, starting with working on, and eventually running the massive annual garage sale fund raiser, which contributed tens of thousands of dollars over the years.
Her sense of community also led her to working on, and again eventually leading the Westfield Library Annual Book sale. This annual event again raised tens of thousands of dollars each year for the library.
She became involved with St. Anne’s of Garwood parish, and joined their Rosary Society, becoming Vice-President and Events Chairperson.
She and her husband enjoyed their time on the weekends by going to auctions & flea-markets, developing several extensive collections. Her most recent joy of life was spending time with her two granddaughters Kathleen and Allison.
Mrs. Senus was predeceased by her husband, Leo J. Senus, in 1995; and her brother, Edward Schilling Jr.
She is survived by her sons, Leon E. & wife Lisa, Gregory P. & wife Patricia along with their daughters Kathleen & Allison.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 pm Thursday June 28th at the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield. The funeral mass will begin at 10am Friday in Holy Trinity R.C. Church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in Mrs. Senus’ name to The Friends of Westfield Memorial Library.
