Obituary

Andrew A. Gioia, Esquire, passed away Sunday December 30th, 2018, surrounded by the love of his family at his home in Westfield, New Jersey. He was 83 years old.

Born December 7, 1935 in Newark, New Jersey to Bridget and Frank Gioia, Andrew graduated from East Side High School in Paterson in 1954 and then Rutgers University in 1969, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Andy then put himself through Law School at night while working as a claims adjuster for State Farm by day earning a law degree from Seton Hall in 1974. Upon passing the bar later that same year, Andy immediately went into private practice where he specialized in criminal law and became a fixture in the Morris, Sussex and Warren county courthouses until his retirement in 2000.

Mr. Gioia was a skilled chess player and artist, and his sharp mind gave him a knack for logic puzzles and riddles. He also enjoyed golf, and was an avid history buff. A loving family man, Andrew was happiest when spending time with his family, particularly at the beach or on outdoor hikes and bike rides. His dry sense of humor was always the source of contagious laughter, and he could rarely finish telling a joke before bursting out laughing himself.

Andrew is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Kathryn Codella Gioia; his children Glenn Gioia, Kristy Perone, Deborah Codella Stuiber and Marc Codella; daughter in law Stacey Codella; his grandchildren Frankie, Nikki, Roman, Tyler, Brendan, Jordan and Casey; sister Chris and brother in law Mike; niece Patty and nephew Michael.

Friends and family will gather between 7pm and 9pm Thursday, January 3rd, at the Dooley Colonial Home 556 Westfield Ave. in Westfield. A funeral mass will begin at 11am on Friday January 4th at the Parish of St. Helen's on Lamberts Mill Road in Westfield.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, donations can be made in Andrew's memory to Center for Hope Hospice & Palliative Care in Scotch Plains.

Dear Kristy and Glenn, My condolences to you both. It’s so hard to lose a parent. When I heard of your dad’s passing so many memories from our childhood came to mind. I can remember playing at your house on Sylvan, the cool brook in the back, “Boots”, your move to a house with an intercom system!, the dollhouse ;) your awesome 70’s outfits, etc. The thing that stands out the most though is how much your dad (& mom) ADORED you both. Really, that’s the thought that keeps coming up...that you were loved & adored. I hope the good memories and the love and support of family and friends will help you through this difficult time. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers. With love, Rose Acampora & Family

Andy always made me feel like a son and I grew to love him as my father-in-law. I'll fondly remember the rounds of golf, steak night outings in NYC with Glenn, Hilton Head family vacations, and talks we had about life. I was even almost able to get him to admit his logic was flawed in the many debates we had, which I always looked forward to. Although the consummate jokester, he offered solid counsel, guidance, and an ear which I greatly appreciated. I was always happy to see him with my parents, Joe and Gilda, as they all enjoyed one another's company. A special guy to me who is missed. Our deepest condolences to the Gioia family. Many fond memories of Mr. Gioia. I was lucky enough to have spent many wonderful times at the Gioia house growing up, listening to lots of jokes and laughter... I especially loved Sunday family dinners with all the Gioias and LoRussos at his parents house when Kristy and I finished working. The Gioias' made you feel like family. I also remember seeing Mr. Gioia as the dad doing the cheers in the stands when Kristy was a cheerleader! Mr. Gioia was our morning uber driver my junior year, and I may have gotten a late slip once or twice because he always did the "speed limit".... I hope that grief will be replaced with comfort gained from a legacy that included laughter, love of the beach, a sharp sense of humor, a willingness to share his knowledge, and pride in his children and grandchildren (and his joy of celebrating his grandchildren's' birthdays at Jose Tejas) My thoughts are with you during this sad and difficult time.
