Angelo N. Alimonti, 92 passed away at his home in Garwood on April 21st, 2019.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Wednesday April 24th at the funeral home. The funeral mass will be held on Thursday at 10am in St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Born at home on Myrtle Ave. to Nazzareno and Margaret (nee DeMarco) Alimonti, Angelo was a lifelong resident of Garwood. After graduating with perfect attendance from Jonathan Dayton Regional High School in Springfield, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving proudly during World War II. Upon returning home, Angelo and Eleanor (nee Mazza) married, and together, in time, they built, with much sweat & tears, their home, of which they were very proud.
Mr. Alimonti worked with his cousin & uncle’s concrete contracting business, C. Marinelli & Son for 20 years before obtaining a position with Arthur L. Johnson Regional High School in Clark as a Bus Driver & Custodian. For the next 20 years, Angelo enjoyed driving the sports bus to activities & his “special kids.” Among his many initiatives over the years was the school’s courtyard duckpond. Beloved by students & staff alike, upon his retirement, Mr. Alimonti was presented a resolution by the Board for his dedicated & helpful manner as a loyal & devoted employee.
Mr. Alimonti was very active with the Garwood Little League, volunteering his time and efforts in maintaining the fields, and in 1962 was awarded an Honorary Life Membership for his untiring and selfless dedication.
A supporter of the Garwood Education Foundation, long time Garwood Lion’s Club & Club Executive Board member, Mr. Alimonti served an unexpired term as a Councilman. He enjoyed sharing his memories of the history of Garwood, and regularly attended town meetings including the Planning Board & Board of Education with his life long friend John.
An avid & dedicated New York Giants fan, Angelo enjoyed visiting Florida, fishing & crabbing with friends & family members, and visits to the Jersey shore. His annual garden was a planned event for months prior, as he often grew the plants from seed, and as recently as last summer he would share the bounty with neighbors, friends, & family. His nurturing of Fig Trees is also well known. Angelo’s helpful & caring demeanor will be missed by all those who knew him, including his dear friend George.
Mr. Angelo Alimonti is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Eleanor Alimonti, children Robert & wife Deby Alimonti & Joann & husband Dennis DiBattista, and granddaughter Amanda; his brothers, Joseph and Carl Alimonti. He is predeceased by his brother Benniey.
