Rosemary Gagliardi (nee Cessario), 76, of Westfield, NJ passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2019 following a warrior’s battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend.
Born and raised in Corona, Queens, Rosemary graduated from The State University of New York, New Paltz with a degree in Education. She later met her husband, Michael, at a CYO dance at Cresthaven Country Club in Whitestone, Queens. They married in 1967, started their life together in Jackson Heights, Queens, and moved to Westfield, NJ in 1975 where they raised their family of three children and have lived for 44 years. Rosemary started her teaching career in Yonkers, NY and then taught in the Westfield school district for more than 20 years, spending most of her time at Washington School as a 5th grade teacher. She also proudly served as a building representative for the Westfield Education Association. After retiring in 2003, Rosemary enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends, and spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved taking Italian lessons, being a member of her book, bridge, and supper clubs, and vacationing (and sipping wine) in Cape May each summer.
She is predeceased by her parents (Marie and Carmelo Cessario). She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Michael Gagliardi; her children and their spouses (Michael & Cindy Gagliardi of Westfield, Lauren Madden and her companion Christopher Peterson of Braintree, Massachusetts, Gregg & Carrie Gagliardi of Villanova, PA); three grandchildren (Michael, Julia, and Christian); her brother, Ralph Cessario of Buffalo, NY; and countless other family members, former students, and devoted friends.
Visitation will be held at Dooley Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Ave, Westfield on Thursday, May 30th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church on Friday, May 31st at 10am. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery located on East Broad Street in Westfield. Rosemary requested that if you remember her with flowers, that they be in pastel colors, or if you wish to make a donation to Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center, please do so in Rosemary’s name.
