Mary Josephine Martin passed away in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, August 17, 2019, after a long battle with cancer. Mary Jo was the wife of Thomas Martin for over 44 years and they shared a wonderful life together that included their two children, Tommy Jr. and Nick.

Mary Jo was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, the daughter of Itolo and Maria Luberto. Along with her sisters, Lois Furrevig and Barbara Amorino, she grew up in a loving home. Mary Jo graduated from St. Mary High School in Jersey City and began her professional career in Manhattan, where she met her husband, Thomas Martin. They married in 1974 and eventually moved to East Brunswick, NJ, where they raised their two sons, Tommy Jr. and Nick. Mary Jo created a wonderful home life and many amazing memories that her husband and children will cherish forever.

Mary Jo returned to the workforce full-time in 1991 and spent the last 26+ years of her career at Rutgers University. Her professional climb from Secretary to Assistant Business Manager was no surprise to anyone who knew her. Mary Jo's work ethic, intelligence, and fondness for Rutgers were traits that were admired by her family, friends, and co-workers. She also enjoyed being creative and was a wonderful cook. If you needed a beautiful centerpiece made or were looking for the best meatballs and gravy in town, then Mary Jo was the best person for the job. To everyone that knew her, she was a very generous, thoughtful, and patient person that family and friends could always count on.

Upon her retirement from Rutgers, Mary Jo and Thomas moved to Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ. They also spent a lot of time in Los Angeles, CA, a place that Mary Jo became very fond of.

Mary Jo is survived by her husband of over 44 years, Thomas Martin; her sons, Tommy Jr. (daughter-in-law, Michelle) and Nick (daughter-in-law, Jill); her grandson, Lucas; her sisters, Lois Furrevig and Barbara Amorino; her nieces, Maria DiPiano, Nicole Biagi, and Dana Furrevig; her grandnieces, Mia DiPiano and Noelle Biagi; and her grandnephew, Christian Biagi.

Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, August 28th, from 6 - 9 p.m. and Thursday, August 29th from 8-10 a.m. at Dooley Colonial Funeral Home (556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090). A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 29th at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church (Corner of 1st St. and Westfield Ave., Westfield, NJ 07090). Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with Mary Jo at Rutgers, and we took Zumba classes together. Besides her kindness and generosity, what I loved most about Mary Jo was her sense of humor. She always made me laugh. My sincerest condolences to the entire family. Claire Bien
