Asbury Park - David A.Cappiello, 84, affectionately known as Dave, Dad, Pa, “Sea
Cap” and Captain Dave, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. Born and
raised in Orange, N.J., he graduated from Orange High in 1954 before enlisting in the
US Army. He served in Europe during Peacetime efforts from 1955-1957.
In 1958, Dave began his career at the Prudential Insurance Company, Newark, N.J..
While standing in the coffee line, he met his first love, Myra Saffarewich, and soon
married in 1959. They had a son and a daughter by 1963. On January 18,1965, his faith
journey began while reading John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave
His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him would not die but have eternal
life”. He and his family attended the Orange Gospel Hall, East Orange, N.J.. Dave had a
renegade spirt throughout his life, but towards the end, he had a powerful experience
with his Creator and was ready to meet Him!
Dave thrived in sales and worked at Kristin Distributing and then F&A Distributors in
Bayonne, N.J.. Desiring to make a better life for his family and parents, Antonio and
Rose Cappiello, he purchased a large home in South Orange, N.J. and worked tirelessly
to restore it back to its original beauty. Dave was a proud patriot, an avid reader, history
buff, great chef, enjoyed a challenge, could fix anything, and enjoyed a good pot of
“gravy” every Sunday after church. Dave was a Scout leader, baseball and softball
coach, but most importantly shared his love of boating, fishing and crabbing with his
kids. Eventually they bought a lagoon front home in Manahawkin, N.J. to enjoy
summers “down the shore”.
In 1986, Dave met his second love and married Pamela Spain in 1988. After retirement,
they both moved to Jacksonville, Florida near Pam’s family. Dave obtained his Captain
license and worked for S.S. Marine Water Taxi, Jacksonville, Florida which brought
him great joy!
David is survived by his son, David M. Cappiello and his wife, Diane of Westfield, N.J.
his daughter, Susan Love and her husband, Gregory of Manasquan, N.J.; his first wife,
Amelia Myra Cappiello; and by his grandchildren, Michael, Benjamin, Gregory,
