Joseph Francis “Chip” Dooley, 86, of Westfield, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains, surrounded by his loving family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, December 16th at 11 AM at Holy Trinity Church, Westfield. Friends may visit Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield on Sunday December 15th from 3 PM to 6PM.
Chip was born in Westfield to Charles and Carolyn Dooley and lived most of his life in Westfield. He was a 1950 graduate of Holy Trinity High School and graduated from Notre Dame University in 1954. After graduating from Notre Dame, Chip joined the United States Marine Corps and served as a Marine fighter pilot, flying Skyraiders from 1954 to 1958. After his discharge from the Corps, he attended McAllister Mortuary School in New York City and joined the family business – Dooley Funeral Service – which was founded by his grandfather in 1913.
Chip spent many happy times on Newboro and Loon Lake in Canada with family and friends. He was the chief operating officer of the Rideau, Newboro and Central Ferry Company of Loon Lake, Canada.
Chip was an active member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, where he served as lector. He had also served on the Westfield Planning Board for 17 years.
He was the beloved husband for 56 years of the late Mary Gurnett Dooley (2010); loving father of four daughters, Mary Sofman & her husband Mark, Sharon Dooley & her husband Doug McKay, the late Maureen Groff (2013) and her husband, Richard Rowley and Moira Dooley-Sautner & her husband Stephen; four sons, Charles V. and his wife Angela, Joseph F., Jr. and his wife, Tina, John L. and his wife Donna and Michael J. and his wife Paula; loving brother of Dr. Charles Dooley, the late Vincent Dooley and the late Carolyn Enderlein. He will be deeply missed by his 19 grandchildren: Carolyn, Charlotte, Peter, Luke, Rae, Vincent, Samantha, Tess, Elinor, Joseph, Maggie, Matt, Hannah, Kerriann, Kathleen, John, Finn, Declan and Calum; and three great-granddaughters Celia, Aurelia and Audrianna; and many nieces and nephews.
